Felix Salmon laments that the online reading experience has been marred by an “almost unthinkably enormous ecosystem of scripts and cookies and auctions” throwing up disproportionate volumes of advertising around one’s reading experience. The alternative for users, especially on the mobile Web, will be to start reading their articles natively in the Facebook or Apple news app, an option which may gives publishers pause for thought.
